"What's a Virus, Anyway ?"
A
Virus is a malicious, but not necessarily
destructive unauthorized,
self duplicating string of code, or program, that copies itself from
program to program on your computer!
It's like a parasite that attaches itself to various types of files (.exe and
.com)
and is caught and spreads itself among infected computers by sharing floppies
and files. Some viruses attach to files
so when the infected file executes, the virus
also executes. Other viruses sit in a computer's memory and infect files as the
computer
opens, modifies or creates the files.
E-MAIL viruses (and spyware)
probably pose the greatest threats to most of us who use the internet for
communicating with family and friends, sharing photos, recipes, chat message
sessions, entertainment, and just routine web surfing.
What are Worms?
A computer worm is a self-replicating
computer program that uses a network to send copies of itself to other
computer terminals on the network and it may do so without any user
intervention.
Unlike a
virus, a computer worm does not need to attach itself to an existing
program. Worms almost always cause harm to the network, if only by consuming
bandwidth, whereas viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted
computer.
That's why Crackers and cyber criminals like to use them for their
hateful attacks on our peace of mind.
Worms are tiny programs that spread them-selves primarily in email messages;
many of which they create just as soon as the email message they are attached to
is opened. They send copies of themselves to every email address in your address
book.
Since they are complete programs in themselves, they can be removed from your
computer by deleting.
"How Can We Protect Ourselves From
Viruses, Worms
and Trojans?"
These
6 basic virus protection steps can go a long way toward keeping you out of trouble:
● Never, ever,
open anyone's personal floppies, CD files, memory
sticks, unless you
scan them first in your anti-virus program!
● Be fearful of any email messages from addresses
(senders) that you don't recognize.
● Be wary of any programs you download from forums,
chat rooms, etc.
● Don't install bootlegged copies of someone else's
software.
●
Keep your anti-virus, operating systems and Firewall programs
up to date.
● If
you're serious about your computer security and Internet safety, and you're collecting
useful information on
firewalls, spyware, virus protection,
and your personal security —

If
you don't have your Virus Protection program yet, here's an
Emergency Step you should take,
Right Now!
McAfee offers a FREE Virus Scanning program called
STINGER.
It has grown in size a little over the past few years and no longer fits on a single floppy Disk.
But so many of the newer PCs, including lap tops don't have a "A" floppy
drive anyway, you should burn it to a CD for an offline back up tool.
You can use it as we do, to check
any of your PC computers for viruses, without being on line.
It is an 'After the Fact' application, which means that it does not scan
incoming email files, attachments or downloads, but it does scan whatever
you have already received online.
It currently checks, and repairs more than 50 recent viruses. It's FREE
to download from
McAfee
